How to Plan for a New Pool Installation

For homeowners, pools are one of the most desired backyard features. There’s nothing quite like being able to relax poolside during the summer! If you’ve been thinking about a new pool for your landscape, now is the best time to start planning the process. With some careful thought and foresight during the spring, your new pool could be ready for your enjoyment this summer! Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan for your new pool installation.

Choosing a Pool Type

In-ground pools tend to come in three different kinds of materials, each of which is suitable for different needs.

  • Vinyl: Vinyl pools are made with a flexible liner that attaches to a metal or polymer frame. There are quite a number of customization options available for vinyl pools, from the shape of the pool to the colors and patterns of the liner. However, these pools are also vulnerable to sharp objects tearing open the liner.
  • Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools come pre-molded from the factory and are set into the hole via crane. These pools are hardier than vinyl pools, and because the fiberglass material is nonporous you won’t need to use as much chemical treatment for upkeep. The one downside to fiberglass pools is that there is very little customization available.
  • Concrete: Concrete is the most durable material available for pools and also allows for a completely custom design. However, you will need to renovate or resurface the pool every ten or twenty years and construction time is longer than any other type of pool.

Advanced Planning

When planning for a new pool, you’ll want to check out your local HOA and municipal laws for any regulations governing the size of your pool or any fencing requirements. Municipal governments may also require you to obtain a permit before construction can begin – check into the process now so you can be ready when you accept a bid from a contractor.
