Essential Lawn Maintenance Tasks for Early Spring

Despite the cold weather outside, it’s never too early to start planning for the coming spring season. Successful maintenance of your lawn early on will ensure that it will be healthy and verdant once the growing season starts. It’s important to start your lawn maintenance tasks as soon as the ground defrosts for best results. Here are some of the tasks you should be doing early this spring.

Clean Up the Mess

Winter can leave your lawn and landscape in a messy state, so your first step ought to be to clean up this mess. Clear away all dead branches and dead leaves from your lawn and make a general assessment of your entire landscape. Check tree limbs for death or disease and make plans for pruning plants that may need it.

Aerating Your Lawn

Aeration can trigger your lawn to wake up from its winter hibernation and begin growing again. Rake out thatched areas of your lawn to allow oxygen to flow through to the soil. You may notice snow mold in some areas, but just rake it out and it should go away in a few days.

Controlling and Preventing Crabgrass

If you notice crabgrass in your lawn, it’s time to think about controlling and preventing it in future growing seasons. You’ll want to apply a preemergent crabgrass control formula to your lawn before the soil temperature hits 55 degrees in order for it to be effective. And if you’re looking to seed your lawn, wait until eight weeks after application of the crabgrass control formula to plant the lawn seed.

Inspect Your Equipment

Winter can also be tough on other parts of your landscape and garden. Check out your irrigation system to make sure it is working properly and inspect your outdoor lighting structures for damage or burnt-out bulbs. Also, get your lawn mower and weed trimmer tuned up so that they’re ready for your regular lawn maintenance tasks this spring!
