3 Tips For Growing Vegetables This Fall

There are a few simple tips to follow when trying to grow your vegetable garden.

Summer has officially come to an end, but that doesn’t mean your vegetable garden needs to take the same fate.  Fall is known for cool temperatures and an increase in rain, which is beneficial for several types of vegetables.  The key is knowing which vegetables to grow and the right time to plant their seeds.  Luckily, there are few simple tips you can follow so that you have a healthy and luscious vegetable garden this fall.

All About Preparation

When it comes to growing vegetables this fall, you need to make sure that your garden is ready for planting.  If you grew produce in the summer, you need to take out the crops that are not performing well. Check your garden for disease-ridden tomatoes or spoiled leafy greens.  You want to clear your garden of all weeds so that they do not take any moisture from your produce. Depending on the vegetables, it might be wise to work some compost into the soil so that they get as many nutrients as possible.

Know What To Grow

It is essential to know what vegetables will thrive during the fall.  There are several crop types that grow in less than 40 days from seed to table, such spinach, turnips, and arugula.  There are a variety of vegetables that thrive in cold weather such as kale, broccoli, and cabbage. Vegetables such as beets, carrots, and turnips will grow in the fall right into the winter.  Overall, you want to choose vegetables that require little maintenance and thrive in cool weather.

Take Care Of Your Garden

One of the most important elements of growing a fall garden is knowing how to care for it.  Fall vegetables require a different kind of care and maintenance than summer produce. When you put your seeds in the ground, they need about an inch of a water a week consisting of several light waterings.  Once the seedlings are established, they just need one deep watering a week. When it starts to frost outside, you want to protect small plants with a cloche and large areas with a blanket or tarp.
