Since our plants won’t come out and tell us they need water, we need another way to figure it out. This is especially important since it is possible to overwater a plant and damage it. The proper way to determine whether plants need water is by checking the soil. If the soil is dry, it’s time to water the plant. If the plant is in a pot, lift it up and feel how heavy it is. Over time you should be able to tell how heavy the potted plant is when the soil is moistened and when it is dry. If the plant is planted in the ground, you might want to consider investing in a soil moisture sensor to know exactly when watering is required.

Watering Tips

Once you’ve determined that it’s a good time for watering your plants, don’t just spray them with the hose and walk away! Use these tips to water your plants the way the professionals do:

  • Focus on the Roots: One of the most important things to remember is that the root system of a plant is what needs water, not the leaves. In fact, watering leaves can actually promote the spread of various plant diseases. So concentrate your watering efforts on the roots.
  • Deep and Thorough: In heavy soil, it can take hours for water to thoroughly penetrate to the bottom of the root system. The roots of lawns and annuals are concentrated in the top 6 inches of the soil – for perennials, shrubs, and trees, the top 12 inches. Check the progress of the watering using a finger or shovel.
  • Water in the Morning: If you should happen to get water on the leaves or other foliage, watering in the morning allows plenty of time for this to evaporate, protecting the plants from the spread of disease.
