You put time and effort into your garden, so the last thing you want is for a deer or raccoon to destroy your plants and produce. Once you create a garden, wildlife creatures think it is just an extension of their habitat. So, it is your job to learn how to prevent the local rabbits from munching on your luscious produce. Luckily, there are a few simple tips for protecting your garden from wildlife.
Identify The Animal
Before you can start thinking of methods to protect your garden, you need to know which animals are eating and damaging your plants. Each animal has a different way of infiltrating a garden, so you need to create a protection method according to the specific creature. You can identify a deer by their tracks in the soil and clean bites of herbaceous and woody plants. Rabbits usually leave pellets behind, and groundhogs leave large mounds of dirt, which is their entrance into your garden. Once you identify the animal, you can determine how to stop them from damaging your garden.
Make Your Garden Undesirable
When it comes to protecting your garden, you want to think of ways to make it unattractive to wildlife. You can start with growing plants that are considered undesirable, such as those that are heavily aromatic, prickly, or fuzzy. You want to avoid growing plants such as hostas and azaleas because they are desirable to many animals. Besides the type of plants in your garden, you want to eliminate hiding places, such as brush piles and tall grass. You want to seal off any crawl spaces around your landscape, including underneath your porch or deck.
Fence It
One of the most effective methods of protecting your garden from wildlife is putting a fence around it. Your fencing can be permanent or just for seasonal use, but you need to make sure it can prevent all types of animals from gaining entry into your garden. So, you want to bury your fencing at least 10 inches into the ground to prevent moles or groundhogs from gaining access. Depending on the number of deer in your area, you want to make your fence at least four to six feet high to prevent them from jumping over it. You also want to make the holes of your fence small and compact to prevent animals, like squirrels, from traveling right through your fence into your garden.
