4 Summer Gardening Tips

Mulching the Garden

Discover a few tips to gardening in the summer.

We are in the middle of May which means summer will be here before we know it.  Since it will be getting warmer outside, you will want to put more attention and effort into your home garden.  Summer is the perfect time to grow beautiful flowers and luscious produce, but you need to know how to do so properly.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips to follow if you want to upkeep your garden throughout the summer.

Add Mulch

Depending on where you live, it can get extremely hot and humid during the summer, so you want to prevent your plants from drying up and dying.  One of the best ways to maintain moisture in your garden is to add a two-inch-deep layer of mulch over your soil. Adding mulch to your garden protects the soil from the sun and keeps the plant roots from drying up.  There is a wide range of mulch selections you can choose from including shredded wood and straw mulch for newly seeded areas.

Focus On Watering

When it comes to gardening during the summer, you need to know how to water your plants properly.  It is best to water your plants in the morning so that your garden has time to soak up with water before the midday heat evaporates the moisture.  Most common garden plants require an inch of water a week. Make sure that you are applying the water directly to the ground so that you can prevent disease and mildew growth.

Add Some Color

Summer is the best time to add some colorful plants to your garden so that you can create a focal point on your property.  You want to focus on growing flowers that thrive in hot temperatures such as calla and cannas. If you want to have a vibrant garden during the summer, then you should grow angelonias and lantanas.

Grow Produce

A great way to enhance your garden during the summer is to start planting produce for your family and guests to enjoy.  There are several types of produce that thrive in the warmer months and are perfect to enjoy during the summer. Beans, celery, and peppers are great vegetables to start growing so that you can enjoy them in your family meals.*Make sure you check your zone prior to planting to make sure the plant can survive.
